Description

This print after Benjamin West’s famous painting of the same name shows William Penn, the founder of the colony of Pennsylvania, making a treaty of peace with members of the Lenape tribe at Shackamaxon on the Delaware River in 1681. Although the scene is allegorical rather than historical, it became an icon of both Quaker-ism and colonial American history. Thomas Penn, William Penn’s grandson, commissioned West to paint the painting, and John Boydell published the engraving after it.
