Description

A riverside scene with a ferry crossing. The river flows across the centre of the composition and then curves sharply round to the left. A small tollhouse stands to the right, with a sign which reads 'VOTE FOR CLIFTON'. A woman walks past, away from the river and another with green shawl, walks on a path towards the river. With here is a child with a toy hoop and stick. Further down the path is a man on a donkey. A family group sit on the bank at left and a woman with child and dog stand nearby to their right. Crossing the river on a ferry is a man on a donkey, a woman and child and another seated woman. A man works on the ferry, pulling the boat along with a rope or chain. On the far bank, another toll house is visible to the left, with a white building in the centre and a church hidden behind trees on the right. Some sheep graze on the right. Further downstream two figures are fishing and another rows. The style is naïve with rigid figures and bright colours.
