Description
No. 52 in Fanshawe's Pacific album, 1849 - 52. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. This is the last of seven drawings which record Fanshawe's inland excursion to see the Andes, while his ship 'Daphne' was at Valparaiso over the winter of 1850-51. Fanshawe and his companion, Young, spent the 15th January at San Felipe - which is on the north bank of the Aconcagua River and which he found a 'dull town'. With a long ride westward ahead, they left at 3 a.m on the 16th for Quillota, where they passed the night before completing the final 40-mile leg of their return to Valparaiso on the 17th. This view presumably looks west down the course of the Aconcagua at some point on the way. From an album of watercolours of Madeira, Brazil, the Falkland and Pacific Islands, Chile, Panama, Mexico, Vancouver, and California. It covers Fanshawe's commission in command of HMS 'Daphne' 1848-52, on the Pacific station based at Valparaiso, Chile, under Rear-Admiral Phipps Hornby in the 84-gun 'Asia'. The earliest dated drawing is of Madeira, 1 January 1849 on the way out, and the last of Cape Horn on the return, 28 May 1852. For further details, see collection online record.
