Description

The obelisk depicted here was originally erected in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis on the orders of Thutmose III, around 1450 BC. It then moved to Alexandria, from where it was taken to London by William James Erasmus Wilson in October 1877. The obelisk is now more familiar to Londoners under its new name, Cleopatra's Needle. It now resides on the embankment near Charing Cross Station.
