Description
The artist, of this undated drawing of the Ogilvie Monument in St. Mary’s Church, Banff, was 'W. Hay', and was probably William Hay, who drew other works in the Hutton Collection. The drawing gives a detailed impression of a monument, consisting of two decorative inscribed panels sculpted from the stone wall under a window in the church. It is one of four images relating to St Mary's Church in the collection. The inscription on the monument reveals that it is in memory of Walter Ogilvy of Dunlugus, Lord Banff, who died in 1558, and his wife Alison Hume, who died in 1557. The lower panel, which dates from 1580, commemorates George Ogilvy, who was probably Walter Ogilvy's son. The Ogilvie family of Banff were a branch of one of Scotland's most prominent noble families, headed by the Earl of Airlie, and later acquired the Earldoms of Findlater and Seafield.
