Description
Print of Dundrennan Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire. This print is entitled 'DUNDRENNAN ABBEY PL. 1', and was a plate from Captain Francis Grose's book 'The Antiquities of Scotland Vol. II', which was published in London. The engraver's initials are 'J.N,' and a note at the bottom left hand side of the page reads ‘Publish’d Augst 29th 1789, by S. Hooper.’ Dundrennan Abbey, about 5 miles south-east of Kirkcudbright and 2 miles distant from the Solway coast, was founded in 1142 by Fergus, Lord of Galloway, and housed a community of Cistercian monks. The abbey became one of the richest in Scotland, and by the sixteenth century had its own representative in Parliament. However, like many of Scotland’s finest ecclesiastical buildings, its decline was rapid after the Reformation of the 1560, and it fell into ruin in the seventeenth century.
