Description

Watercolour illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh. ROX1880.
In his 'Flora Indica' Roxburgh reports that this species was found by Dr. Buchanan at Chittagong, and seeds were sent by him to the Botanic garden of Calcutta, in 1797. Here the trees grew luxuriantly, flowering around the end of the hot season and ripening their seed ten months later. Roxburgh adds: 'In twelve years the trees are thirty or forty feet high; thick in proportion, and promise to be larger.'
