Description
Watercolour on paper, The Irish House of Lords and College Green, Dublin by James Malton (1761 – Marylebone 1803). Side of Corinthian portico of the House of Lords in foreground, with view of Trinity through it, to the right. The extensions to the Irish House of Lords were built by James Gandon 1784–c.1789 onto the Parliament House (now Bank of Ireland). (cf. Edward McFarland, James Gandon, London, 1985, pp.76–84, e.g. fig.77 [this]). Thomas Malton the Younger spent three years in Gandon’s office in London.
James Malton’s father, Thomas Malton the Elder (1726–1801), took him and his elder brother, Thomas Malton the Younger (1748–1804), when he retreated to Dublin in 1785 because of pecuniary embarrassments. Like his father, he was a professor of perspective and geometry. In 1797 he published A Picturesque and Descriptive View of the City of Dublin, from drawings taken by himself, in 1791–95. He died of brain fever.
