Description

This drawing is dated October 7th 1820, but is not attributed to any artist, and may be one of George Henry Hutton's own works. This is one of several items relating to Loch Tay Priory which were collected or created by Hutton over a number of years. Priory Island is a small wooded island at the east end of Loch Tay, near to the outlet of the River Tay. The island is believed to have been the site of the death of Queen Sybilla, the consort of Alexander I of Scotland. The King is reputed to have granted the island to the monks of Scone Abbey in 1122, on the condition that a priory was erected there in Queen Sybilla's memory. After the Reformation in 1560, the remains of the priory were incorporated into a fortified home by a local landowner, Campbell of Glenorchy, and much of what remains today probably dates from the later building.
