Description

This is a sketch of a south-west view of Restenneth Priory, Angus. The artist's name is missing, but it is likely that Hutton made it himself. This is one of several sketches of Restenneth Priory in the Collection, and gives an impression of the setting of the priory, among trees and with rolling hills to the north-east. This sketch suggests that Restenneth Priory, when the artist visited it, looked much the same as it does today. The steeple is nearly intact, but the adjoining buildings are partial ruins. Most of the buildings date from the Augustinian priory founded in the twelfth century, but some stones from a seventh- or eighth-century Pictish church on the same site form part of the walls.
