Description

This drawing shows the ruins of Innerwick Castle, as viewed from below. The castle, which is strategically positioned on a high rocky outcrop, clearly dominates the surrounding landscape. Also included in the Hutton Collection is a very simplistic drawing of the castle from the same angle: possibly a preliminary sketch by the same artist. Originally built for the Stewart family, Innerwick Castle passed to the Hamiltons before being captured and destroyed by the Duke of Somerset in the mid-sixteenth century. Although the remains of Innerwick Castle are still visible today, in the seventeenth century the ruins suffered a common fate; after being destroyed and abandoned, it was used as a quarry to provide building materials for the local area.
