Description
Mounted with three printed excerpts, the first cut from "Don Juan" (1819-1824) by Lord Byron, Canto III, Stanza LXXV: "he found himself at sea,/ Sailing six knots an hour before the wind:/ The shores of Ilion lay beneath their lee—/ Another time he might have liked to see 'em,/ But now was not much pleased with Cape Sigaeum.” The second excerpt is a footnote: “A sculptor projected to hew Mount Athos into a statue of Alexander with a city in one hand and, I believe, a river in his pocket, with various other similar devices. But Alexander’s gone and Athos remains, I trust, ere long, to look over a nation of freemen.” This footnote refers to the third excerpt, taken from "Don Juan", Canto XII, Stanza LXXXVI: “And hew out a huge monument of pathos,/ As Philip's son proposed to do with Athos.” From: "Album No.5, Carelli's Sketches, 1839, Sicily & the East".
