Description

On the left-hand side of this sheet is a detailed drawing of a standing stone and, at the top of the sheet, the artist has included magnified versions of the runic inscriptions on the stone. A note to the left of the drawing reads, 'Inscription on a stone 6½ feet high (Granite) near Newton, Aberdeenshire. The marks on the edge are notches there being no other ornament. The dotted lines in the plate indicate uncertainty of the forms. H. Irvine. 1821'. The place the artist describes as 'Newton' is probably the farming area near Huntly now known as Logie Newton, where there is a standing stone believed to date from Neolithic times. At the bottom of the sheet there is a handwritten note by Hutton describing how the drawing came into his possession: 'Presented to me this day, 7th April 1821, by my worthy friend Prof. Stuart (Mar. Col. Aberd.), who received it from Mr Irvine the ingenious artist'.
