Description

This watercolour, which shows the town of Salerno dwarfed by mountains which dark clouds loom above, was originally in the collection of the artist’s patron, William Beckford. In May 1782, with an entourage of tutors, doctors, musicians and servants, Cozens left for Italy with Beckford. The route and Cozens’s subsequent activities in and around Naples are documented in seven sketchbooks which are preserved at the Whitworth Art Gallery. Cozens was described by Constable as ‘the greatest genius that ever touched landscape.’ His watercolours, are characterised a narrow range of colours which are built up principally through a series of washes. He was one of the first watercolour artists to move the medium beyond the topographical recording of nature and on to a platform where it could attract the same level of attention as painting in oils.
