Description

A sketch of a south-east view of Guthrie Collegiate Church, Angus, dated September 1814 and probably one of Hutton's own sketches. It shows a modest, single-storey L-shaped church building surrounded by a graveyard filled with ancient-looking, irregularly-positioned tombstones. The village of Guthrie lies approximately eleven kilometres east of Forfar and had a church by 1150 that became collegiate in the late fifteenth century. People founded and dedicated Collegiate churches in Scotland to securing salvation and the favour of God for their families. The churches often later came to have schools attached to them.
