Description

This is one of several detailed drawings from St Machar's made by J. Logan and contained in the Hutton Collection, and is dated 1819. Today, Bishop Leighton’s monument stands near the north-west corner of the main body of the cathedral, but it has occupied several different locations in the past. A note under the title gives the dimensions of the monument: 'The Length of the Tomb is 8 feet; the depth is 2 feet 7 inches, the height of the arch, from the slab on which the figure reclines 3 feet 1 inch. The height from the ground is 2 feet 2 inches, including the slab, the thickness of which is 6 inches. The stone, which bears the inscription, is 5 feet 11inches long, and 1 foot 3 inches broad. The small stone is 2 feet 4 inches in length, and 11 inches in breath at the bottom. It formerly lay in Bishop Dunbar's aisle'.
