Description
Shows a view looking up Bowen Street to its junction with the Terrace (the full length of Bowen Street at that time). Museum Street goes off on the right, and Alexander Turnbull's garden fence is on the left. A man pushes a handcart up the street. The Arts Club building is a white two-storeyed building with round-arched windows at the end of Bowen Street.
The artist may be William Barr Montgomery, C.B.E. of Kelburn, who was Comptroller of Customs in Wellington, and described in his obituary as a chemist and "no mean artist". (See Dominion, 23 November 1936, page 10).
Wellington Arts Club was founded in 1910 (See NZ free lance, 11 June 1910, page 6, column c, and page 14, column a).
