Description

This miniature portrait shows Captain John Christian, an officer in the Royal Manx Fencibles.
The portrait is of great interest because it contains details about the style of uniform worn by officers in this formation.
Fencible regiments were raised throughout the British Isles during the Napoleonic Wars with France, to replace regular troops who had been sent abroad. The name derives from 'defencibles' as the new regiments were for home service only. In the Isle of Man as elsewhere, the officers were provided by prominent local families, such as the Christians.
