Description

This is a copy of a drawing of St Nicholas Hospital and part of the Bishop's Palace, Glasgow 'from a drawing in the possession of Mr Wilson, Bookseller, Glasgow, 1813'. The name of the artist is unknown. Hutton's note beneath the title reads, 'N.B. This Hospital was pulled down to make way for a new street, about the year 1810'. Perhaps surprisingly, this is the only drawing or sketch from Glasgow contained in the Hutton Collection. St Nicholas's Hospital and the Bishop's Palace stood in the heart of medieval Glasgow, just yards from Glasgow Cathedral. St Nicholas's Hospital was not a hospital in the modern sense, but rather an alms house, which was endowed by Bishop Andrew Muirhead of Glasgow to provide care for twelve old men. It may date from between 1456 and 1471. Provand's Lordship, the oldest surviving house in Glasgow, which dates from 1471, was attached to the hospital and served as the manse of the Master or Preceptor of St Nicholas's Hospital chapel.
