In his 'Flora Indica', Roxburgh describes this species as a common twining plant, which is found in most hedges and flowers during the wet season. Roxburgh gives an account of the uses of this plant and writes that the juice of the ripe berries gives a durable and purple ink. He adds that a decoction of the fresh roots, mixed with heads of long pepper, in goats' milk, and taken as a half a pint every morning, is administered for rheumatic and old venereal pains. Moreover, if the fresh leaves are rubbed in water, they thicken into a green jelly, which is sweetened with sugar, and drank when fresh made, to the quantity of half a pint, twice a day for the cure of 'heat of urine' in gonorrhoea. Sealy identified the subject of the drawing as a 'Menispermum hirsutum Willd.'
