Description

An encampment outside Alexandria on four plates; with artillery, tents and soldiers lined up along a wall looking across the sea towards the city; proofs before letters. 1804. Hand-coloured aquatint and etching.

Inscription

Inscribed in pencil on a piece of paper stuck to the backing: 'The position of the British forces in Egypt drawn from the centre battery of the camp before Alexandria/ the site of the battle of the Nile and the battle of Alexandria is represented. The painter was Captain Walker / of the ((3rd dragoon) [...] but not in army list) Guards who is represented in the battery looking at the camp. He was a native of Leeds and was killed in the battle of Talavera 1809. / 4th son of William Walker of Killingbeck
