Conway Mordaunt Shipley was a naval officer and artist who was known to have visited Singapore in the mid-19th century. This watercolour shows a typical composition used during the period to represent Singapore. Depicting the landscape from a high viewpoint and emphasized further by the wide vistas, View from the back of Government House Hill, Singapore highlights the development of the settlement in relation to its boundaries that come to take shape between the land, coast and its outerlying islands.
