Bastion Sterrenburg was built between 1554 and 1558 during the time of Emperor Charles V. On the defensive canal, Charles V had four stone strongholds built by city architect Willem van Noort based on the Italian fortification system. Sterrenburg was one of them. The stronghold received a sentry box, a shed and double gun cellars. A corridor and a drinking water supply were created. The defensive stronghold has never been used in a war and from 1600 it got a different destination. From then on, Bastion Sterrenburg was used, among other things, as manure storage. Around 1842 the stronghold was largely demolished and it is now a characteristic part of the Zocherplantsoen along the canal. If you now walk along the bottom of the building you can still recognize the gun cellars and there is still a well in the courtyard.
