Description

This sketch, possibly of Fearn Abbey, Ross-shire, is not dated and is unsigned by the artist but may be one of Hutton's own works. There are at least nine items relating to Fearn Abbey in the Hutton Collection, but it is not entirely clear whether this sketch refers to the same site. The title 'Fearn Island Priory' under this sketch introduces an element of doubt about what the sketch is supposed to represent. Fearn Abbey is not on an island, but it is in the eastern peninsula of Ross-shire erroneously known as the Black Isle. Moreover, the religious foundation at Fearn seems to have been an abbey from its beginnings, rather than having been promoted from priory status. It may be that the artist, whether Hutton or not, made this sketch while still unsure of the history and exact geography of the site. However, the sketch is too incomplete to be conclusively recognisable as Fearn Abbey, and the possibility remains that it may be of a completely different site, and that there may be some error in the location ascribed to it.
