Description

The cotton caterpillar moth in flight, shown with pupa and caterpillar on a stem of cotton plant in flower and leaf. According to artist's notes 'Feeds on the Sea Island Cotton, spun up in a leaf 24th Augt, bred 3rd Sept. This species which is the dread and scourge of cotton planters in the Islands and lower parts of the Country, is some years so numerous as entirely to destroy fields of cotton of 100 acres in 10 or 12 days, was not known before the year 1804 to extend into the inland parts. And what seems very extraordinary tho' so amazing plenty that year. I have not heard with any certainty of any being seen for several years after.'
