Description

This small watercolour came from a collection of watercolours, mainly comprising small paintings by George Cumberland (1754-1848), which show signs of having being pasted in an early 19th-century album (this watercolour however is an exception, showing no signs of pasting on the verso). It depicts a wooden building with porch, other buildings to the left, some sort of bucket and pivot system in the field behind. Inscribed in pencil verso is "Post House at Hern...fa..., 3rd station, the first at which we stopped, ...road from [Idensalmi?] to [Kayana?]". The inscription appears to relate to place names in Finland. 'Idensalmi' is now 'Iisalmi' ('Idensalmi' was the Swedish word), and 'Kayana' is 'Kajaani' - there is a road between these two towns shown on maps of Finland. The wording used implies the artist could have been on some sort of pilgrimage (3rd Station- of the Cross?).
