Watercolour illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh. ROX13.
In his 'Flora Indica', Roxburgh notes that 'with P.dumetorum its is a common, rigid, shrubby species;it seems also to delight in a poor soil, and like it is armed with strong sharp thorns. Brought into a good soil these almost totally disappear'. This illustration appeared in Roxburgh's 'Plants of the Coast of Coromandel' as 'Gardenia fragrans', which was the original name on the drawing and in the Kew manuscript. The drawing is inscribed 'Received 20th January 1791 from Houghton' in an unknown hand, referring to the East India Company ship responsible for delivering the illustration.
