Description

The strength of the Whitworth's watercolour collection lies largely in the 18th century, but we do have some good examples of the landscape watercolours of the 19th century. one of the Gallery's aims is to identify and fill gaps, as well as to add to and complement existing strength. One notable omission was an example of work by J.W.North, who, together with G.J. Pinwell and Fred Walker (both represented at the Whitworth), developed landscape painting on Pre-Raphaelite principles during the 1860s and 1870s. The Gallery has been looking for J. W. North's work for several years, and attempted to buy a watercolour at auction in 1991, but was outbid at the sale; the acquisition of this excellent example of his later exhibition style was therefore particularly welcome.
