Description

Tower of Kilmun Collegiate Church, Argyllshire. This drawing dates from August 1802, but is unsigned. The drawing depicts the square tower at Kilmun, which is the only remaining part of a collegiate church founded in 1442 by Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochawe, Chief of the Clan Campbell and ancestor of the Dukes of Argyll. The body of water in the background is the Holy Loch. Collegiate churches in Scotland were largely a phenomenon of the fifteenth century. Usually they sit on the sites of existing churches that had been under the patronage of a particular family or individual. Although the collegiate churches were places of Christian learning for a 'college' of clergy, they were also dedicated to holding masses and prayers for the salvation of their patrons' souls.
