Description

The Hermitage is a small stone shelter in the grounds of Tollymore House, designed by James Hamilton (2nd Earl of Clanbrassil) in the 1770s in memory of his friend the Marquis of Monthermer. It is built into the side of the gorge above the river and was used as a place for ladies to shelter while the men fished. The house was demolished in 1952 but the park and hermitage still exist in Tollymore Forest Park at Bryansford near the town of Newcastle
