TWW Comment

On 4 March 1837, Martin Van Buren took over from Andrew Jackson to become the eighth President of the United States. The inauguration ceremony, which took place on the East Portico of the Capitol building, was a respectful affair: Van Buren and Jackson rode together in an open carriage pulled by four gray horses, and the new President promised to ‘tread generally in the footsteps of President Jackson’. Van Buren served a single term before losing to Whig Party nominee William Henry Harrison.
