Description

Charles Henry Cazalet spent three years in Penang between 1856 to 1859 as part of his military duties, during which he made several watercolours. This watercolour shows a road downhill, towards Georgetown (present-day Penang). Early watercolours of Penang, as well as other parts of the Straits Settlements such as Malacca and Singapore, were often framed with such a perspective looking from above, highlighting the extent of the settlement and the generous wealth of the land. The typical inverted U-shape of Georgetown with the harbour, shows that this vantage point is likely to be somewhere on the Penang Hill. Medium: Watercolour, laid down on card
