Kern was part of the Rodgers-Ringgold Expedition, a United States scientific and exploring project from 1853 to 1856. In 1855, they visited Japan, and in May were in ‘Hey-da’ and ‘Sima-da’ ports according to the detailed journal ‘The North Pacific surveying and exploring expedition’ by A.W. Habersham. Another picture by Kern of 'Utsiuru Harbor' is dated 'May 1855'.
