Description

Walker painted this watercolour while staying with his fellow artist Myles Birket Foster at Witley in Surrey; it portrays the sinking of a well in Foster’s grounds and was exhibited at the Old Watercolour Society in 1868. Walker was one of several talented artists who followed on from the Pre-Raphaelites and whose work first came to prominence in the 1860s. Together with G. J. Pinwell, J. W. North and Millais, he transformed British book illustration with his contributions to periodical magazines, although his career was cut short by illness.
