Description

This watercolour is part of a set of six depicting the 'Akbar' in different weather conditions and on different dates throughout August and September of 1815. This shows the 'Akbar' on 30 August in a severe storm. She is pictured from her port-bow side and is pitching dramatically towards her starboard side. The print is signed by the artist on the mount at the lower right. George Back joined the 'Akbar' as midshipman in 1814, after having been a prisoner of war from 1809. Medium includes graphite.
