Description

A series of views of the Łazienki Park represents a ‘unique monument of Romanticism’ [Shlikevich 2005. P. 41]. Some pavilions, structures and artificial landscapes of Lazienki have not come down to us. The Palace on the island also underwent a lot of later changes. In 1788 three fronts of the building were rebuilt in the Classical style, two side wings were added and the size of the building was considerably enlarged. In 1792 the architect Merlini built side pavilions near the palace, from where glass galleries over the arches led to the main building. The galleries and the foyer of the Hermitage Theatre allowed for a wonderful view of the water surface. Another watercolour painting by Vogel, showing the front of the palace in close-up, allows one to get a general idea of the setting. The lithograph of Leonard Shmidtner, who devoted his third book to the architecture of Stanislaw August, also reproduces the appearance of the king’s former country residence, which today is located nearly within the city centre and looks different. The interiors were decorated by Jan Chrystian Kamsetzer with the participation of the court painter Marcello Bacciarelli, the sculptor Andre Lebrun, and also the artist Jan Bogumił Plersch and the sculptors Jacomo Monaldi and Franciszek Pinc.
