Description

This is one of a group of watercolours and drawings produced by Robert Elwes recording scenes witnessed on his world tour (1848-1850). These form the basis of printed illustrations for his travelogue 'A Sketcher's Tour Round the World', published 1854.
Painting is inscribed on verso: "Bathurst". However, this view does not tally exactly with Bathurst and may instead depict the ferry over the Nepean at Penrith (NSW). In 'A Sketcher's Tour Round the World' (p288), Elwes records how he was ferried across the Nepean at 'Emu Ferry' outside Penrith on 1st November 1849. Possibly the church depicted in the distance is St. Stephens, Penrith, which was erected in 1844.
