Description

This page shows an engraving of Kelso Abbey from the north-east. The engraving is not titled, nor is it attributed to any artist, and there is nothing to suggest what publication or occasion the engraving might have been made for. It appears, however, that it might have been made from a 1788 drawing of Kelso Abbey from the same perspective, also in the Hutton Collection and probably the work of George Henry Hutton himself. This is one of five items relating to Kelso in the collection. Kelso Abbey was founded for a group of Tironensian monks by King David I in 1128, on a site on the north bank of the River Tweed. At that time the principal settlement in the area was Roxburgh, immediately to the south-west, which had held royal burgh status since 1120. The town of Kelso grew up around the abbey, initially starting as a small village, but being granted ecclesiastical burgh status and extended trading rights by 1237, and as Roxburgh went into decline, Kelso became an increasingly important market town which prospered from its location on the main route between Edinburgh and Newcastle.
