A dreamer of refuges dreams of a hut, of a nest, or of nooks and corners in which he would like to hide away, like an animal in a hole.'Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of SpaceThe works in this section show ancient cottages that seem to grow out of the earth. They are enclosed by trees, laden with ivy, thatched with straw. Hanging in mainly urban homes, they would remind their owners of the genealogy of their house, its descent from the refuge of the hut. In looking at such a picture, and perhaps many of the pictures in this exhibition, the viewer enters into a world of reverie and savours the pleasures of solitude and security.
