Description

Watercolour painting on paper of Annona squamosa a small well-branched tree or shrub, the fruit of which is commonly referred to as sugar apples, not ‘custard apples’ as inscribed on the painting. The painting shows a branch of the tree with numerous smaller branches bearing oval shaped dark green leaves. The branch also bears two cream coloured flowers and a green fruit, or sugar apple. In the lower left corner of the paper is a cross section of the fruit and a detail of the seed and flower of the tree. Areas of the painting have been burnished to give a three-dimensional quality to the painting. The painting is from an album of 58 botanical paintings.
