Description

There is no title, artist or date attached to this sheet, but it belongs with another three drawings that depict Blantyre Priory and the River Clyde. The other three all date from the turn of the eighteenth century. The priory is just visible in the copse of trees, and the brickwork was red and so would have been visible. Rather than highlighting this beautiful contrast, the artist has chosen to stylise and blend the priory into its surroundings. Patrick, Earl of Dunbar established the Priory at Blantyre between 1238 and 1249; he was also responsible for founding the Trinitarian complex at Dunbar in 1218. Blantyre was a daughter house of Jedburgh Abbey and was of the Augustinian Order. Patrick's foundation of ecclesiastical houses not only adhered to royal policy, but also directly mimicked royal power and behaviour. His actions represented a sign of loyalty and obedience.
