Description

This drawing, probably by George Hutton, is dated August 8th 1815. There are a number of drawings of the abbey in Hutton's collection, as well as a plan by Andrew Nisbet. Kinloss Abbey lies 3 miles north-east of Forres. Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, King David I founded the Abbey in 1150 when the monks of the Cistercian Order inhabited it. It received its Papal Bull from Pope Alexander III in 1174 and came under the protection of the Bishop of Moray in 1187. It ceased to be an active monastery in the mid-seventeenth century.
