Description

The title of this watercolour drawing reads, 'Dunfermline Abbey, Fifeshire No 117'. There is no date or artist's name. Drawn from a distance, it shows the abbey towering above surrounding treetops. Queen Margaret - wife of King Malcolm III - founded Dunfermline Abbey around 1070, on the site of a much earlier Celtic church. Established as a Benedictine monastery dedicated to the Holy Trinity, Margaret's son, David I, eventually extended and elevated the Priory to Abbey status in the early-twelfth century. Margaret and Malcolm's bodies lie in the Abbey and, almost 160 years after her death, Margaret became a saint.
