Description

Half-length frontal portrait of an Aboriginal man, his hair covered with red ochre.

One of 3 known watercolour originals of this subject; the others are held at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford Royal Anthropological Institute, London. The subject was also known as 'the Doctor'. Trugernana may have been his first wife and he had two sons, Robert and David Bruny by her. His 2nd wife was Lalla Rooka. He was aged about 40 at the time this portrait was made
