Description

This is one of several drawings of the Abbey contained in the Hutton Collection, but the artist's name is not given. Here the artist is looking south-west towards the entrance of a gate-house, which is the only surviving part of the abbey. Coupar Angus Abbey, built between 1161 and 1164, stands on land gifted by King Malcolm IV to a group of Cistercian monks from Melrose. By the mid-sixteenth century, it was the wealthiest Cistercian monastery in Scotland but, in 1559, a Reformist mob burnt its buildings. Over the years, the remains were broken up for building material, until only one gate-house remained.
