Description

A view of Black Castle, Co. Wicklow, situated on a rocky coastal promontory, along the Wicklow coast. In the left foreground, a man stands on a sandy shore under a large overhanging rock.
The castle was built by the Normans in the thirteenth century to protect the area from the local O’Byrne and O’Toole clans. It was abandoned around the end of the seventeenth century. The two towers shown at either end of Beranger’s drawing survive in part today, but the intervening wall that he shows is completely disappeared.
