Animal study
This is a plate from A Natural History of Uncommon Birds (London, 1743-1751) by George Edwards, known as the "Father of British Ornithology." Edwards made the drawings on which the prints are based. He also etched and hand coloured the plates, and wrote the accompanying text. This duck is not identified in the He also etched inscription but it is a Goosander (mergus merganser). It is characterized by the hooked, serrated, red bill. The colouring appears to be generally accurate except that the Gossander does not have a red-brown ring across its upper breast as shown in this print.
