Watercolour illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh. ROX1481.
In his 'Flora Indica', Roxburgh describes this species as an annual, erect and ramous plant, whose recurvate leaves have lobes almost entire. He also writes: 'Of what part of India this is a native is to me uncertain, I can only say, that it made its first appearance in the Botanic Garden [at Calcutta], where earth from the Coromandel coast had been spread; of course, I conclude it is from thence.'
