Description

Watercolour painting on paper of a woman smoking a huqqa with an attendant. The woman sits on a padded stool on a terrace, with a lake and hills in the distance. The terrace is decorated with a blue and white striped surface. The woman wears wide green trousers with a purple blouse and a red shawl draped across her chest. She wears jewellery at her neck, in her hair and on her feet. She holds the end of the huqqa in her right hand and points to the lake with her left. The huqqa and vessel are placed on the floor in front of her. She is looking over her shoulder at the male attendant who is offering her a string of necklaces. He wears a white tunic over yellow trousers embellished with flowers. A purple sash is tied around his waist and he wears a peaked hat. In his right hand he holds a walking stick and the string of necklaces in his left. He wears ornate cogs on his feet with up-turned toes. The painting is surrounded by a thin black line.
