Additional Makers
Edward Arthur Williams (1824-1898)
Description
Grafton Gully in the foreground, with two large graves prominent. In the middle distance are houses and the outline of a church, while the Waitemata Harbour, with North Head and Rangitoto Island (inaccurately drawn) are in the background
Possibly copied by Hamley from a drawing of his superior officer, E. A. Williams, although no Williams' original for this view is known.
Captain Henry Mercer was killed at Rangiriri in October 1863. The town Mercer was named after him. Commodore Burnett was in charge of H. M. S. Orpheus, which ran ashore on the Manukau Bar in February 1863, with the loss of much of its crew, including Burnett.
